씽크프리 - 한컴오피스, 웹 - 모바일 연동기능 강화

한글과컴퓨터는 ‘한컴오피스 2010’의 온라인 연동기능을 강화한 제품 업데이트를 진행한다고 9일 밝혔다. 또한 이와 함께 웹에서 내 문서를 볼 수 있는 ‘씽크프리 온라인’의 모바일 사이트를 발표하여, 언제 어디서나 ‘한컴오피스 2010’으로 작성된 문서의 온라인 저장 및 모든 모바일 기기에서의 문서 확인이 가능하게 되었다. 

한컴의 이번 발표는 문서의 활용 범위가 PC를 넘어 온라인-모바일 기기 등으로 확장되고 있는 추세에 맞춰 진행되었다. 

한컴은 먼저 문서 작성에 가장 최적화되고 친숙한 기기인 PC와 온라인을 연동하는 기능을 강화하여, ‘한컴오피스 2010’에서 웹오피스인 ‘씽크프리’의 문서를 불러오거나, 저장하는 등 온라인 영역으로의 문서 활용 가능성을 높이는데 중점을 둔 업데이트를 발표했다. ‘한컴오피스 2010’ 메뉴 상에 온라인 저장 기능이 부가된 것으로, 사용자들은 오피스를 사용하면서 별도의 프로그램 구동없이 ‘씽크프리’의 무료 온라인 저장공간에 접속해 내 문서를 불러오거나 저장하는 기능을 간단히 실행할 수 있게 된다. 


한컴은 PC에서 제작된 문서의 온라인 활용 기능을 강화하는 한편, 모바일 기기에서의 활용도를 높이기 위해 ‘씽크프리 온라인’의 모바일 사이트도 함께 발표했다. 씽크프리의 모바일 사이트는 모든 종류의 스마트폰에서 접속가능하며, 내문서함에 저장된 모든 문서를 다운로드해서 확인할 수 있도록 지원한다. MS 오피스 문서형식인 doc, xls, ppt는 물론 한컴오피스 한글 파일포맷인 hwp도 지원하여, 언제 어디서나 모든 스마트폰에서 내문서 확인이 가능하다. 


‘한컴오피스 2010’의 업데이트는 정품 사용자들에게 무료로 지원되며, ‘씽크프리 온라인’ 모바일 사이트는 누구나 무료로 접속해 사용할 수 있다. 

한컴은 이번 발표 이후에도 PC-웹-모바일의 경계를 넘어 오피스를 자유롭게 사용할 수 있도록 다양한 기능을 개발하고 발표할 계획이다. ‘한컴오피스 2010’에서 작성한 문서의 온라인 공유 기능 강화 및 ‘씽크프리 온라인’ 모바일 사이트의 다국어 버전, 미리보기 기능 등을 개발하여 순차적으로 공개할 예정이다. 한편 이번 ‘한컴오피스 2010’ 업데이트에서는 영문 언어를 지원한다. 이번 업데이트를 설치한 후 ‘한컴 기본 설정’ 프로그램을 통해 영문 OS 환경에서도 한글 뿐만 아니라 영어로 된 메뉴명과 대화상자를 사용할 수 있다.

‘씽크프리 스마트 웹하드 패키지’는 스마트폰에 최적화된 전용클라이언트를 통해 전체적인 화면이 풀 브라우징 방식의 그림파일이 아닌 최소한의 문서관리를 위한 데이터만 전송되는 방식으로 반응속도를 개선한 것은 물론 패킷 용량도 절약된다. 또한 문서를 이미지로 변환하여 다운로드가 가능함에 따라 원본에 가까운 문서형태가 유지되는 것이 특징이다.

사용자들에게는 기존 씽크프리 온라인 웹하드 용량에 1GB를 추가한 웹하드 서비스를 제공될 뿐 아니라 저장 파일 포맷에 제한이 없어, 여타 웹하드(온라인 스토리지)기반 온라인 서비스들에 비해 저렴한 비용으로 문서, 사진, 스마트폰용 SW 등의 데이터 저장소로도 활용 가능하다.

On October 21, Haannsoft Inc. (www.haansoft.com, CEO Young-Ick Kim, hereinafter referred to as "Haan") announced the release of ThinkFree Tegaru Office, a Japanese version of its office suite that can be used in Windows 7 and will soon be available nationwide from Sourcenext Corporation, Haan's authorized seller in Japan.

ThinkFree users will have no difficulty using the software in Microsoft's new Windows 7 OS — officially released on October 22. The new package includes the same programs as the previous version: Write (word processor), Calc (spreadsheet program) and Show (presentation program).

As well as retaining the core functions of the existing suite, the software is also compatible with MS Office. However, unlike the previous version, ThinkFree will be stored on a USB pen and sold in major stores for JPY 4,980. Sourcenext Corporation will oversee all sales as Haan's authorized seller in Japan.

Since ThinkFree Tegaru Office entered the Japanese market in 2007, the software has been popular thanks to its excellent functionality and compatibility with the MS office suite. As at August, 2009, Haan achieved the second highest total annual sales in Japan, outperformed only by its counterpart Microsoft, and Haan expects this sales figure to increase even further thanks to the new software's advanced features.

Haan also plans to build on the success of the ThinkFree program and establish itself firmly in the Japanese market as a reliable software producer, as well as launching its products on the international market.

ThinkFree has earned over 700,000 users worldwide with its free online office document tools, and now it's trying to expand that appeal to small- and mid-size businesses with the ThinkFree Server Enterprise. It works safely behind firewalls, and promises easy document creation and collaboration tools.

ThinkFree started back in 1999 and was acquired by Haansoft Inc, its current parent company, in 2003. Most of the company's 150 employees are in Seoul, South Korea, although it maintains a satellite office in the United States. it's been selling desktop versions of its products in brick-and-mortar U.S. stores since 1999, beginning online sales in 2006.

Enterprise isn't a new area for ThinkFree. While it offers a desktop suite, as well as versions for the Android operating system and netbooks, it also offers a standard server edition. The new Server Enterprise edition, however, differs in that it works behind a firewall and integrates with existing services.

All ThinkFree versions include three core office applications for word documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. One crucial feature, says Edward Coloma, managing director for ThinkFree in the U.S., is that they offer roundtrip compatibility with Microsoft Office documents. The people behind ThinkFree know that the majority of office users have Microsoft Office, and so it sticks with the established Office formats.

ThinkFree's three office applications are built in Java and work with Windows, Macintosh, and Linux computers. They also have a small footprint, says Coloma, taking up just 17MB of space. That compactness has made them easy to adapt for mobile devices, he says. Look for a ThinkFree smartphone edition next year.

The philosophy behind the line, says Coloma, is that people should be able to access and work on their documents anytime. That's why ThinkFree products, including the free version, come with online storage.

Collaborating with Enterprise

ThinkFree Server Enterprise joins a family of products that debuted in 2006. Customers initially wanted a version of the ThinkFree suite that would integrate with existing services. To satisfy demand, the company created ThinkFree Server Integrator. For this product, however, the company combined the same functionality found in the online suite with collaboration tools and made it work behind firewalls.

A software-only product, ThinkFree Server Enterprise can be purchased online or from company sales representatives. The server requirements for the installation are surprisingly low. Any Windows computer can be a server, as long as it has 1GB of RAM and 500GB of storage. Most ThinkFree versions offer 1GB of online storage space, but since this version in self-hosted and sits behind a firewall, there's no storage limit.

The suite's collaboration tools let users share documents individually or with a group. Sending documents works with controls in the suite itself; there's no need to use e-mail. If you're sending to a group, only one person at a time will be able to edit the document. You can add a note when forwarding a document, and you can also see what changes other users have made. A future ThinkFree upgrade will offer versioning, says Coloma, but he couldn't say when that will happen.
